Photographs
Peat and peatlands have been used in Sweden since ancient times. Harvesting from mires and using peat litter for horeses and other livestock go back a long time. Draining of peatlands for agriculture and forestry was done as early as the 1800s. More information about the Swedish history of peat at the Swedish Peat Producers web.
